The GRUEN Airflight Precision has unique switching hour-windows that change colors mechanically at midnight/noon, to represent 12-hour standard time or 24-hour military time. This particular Airflight is the early base design of the advertised model above (see print advertisement to compare).
The GRUEN Airflight was designed for pilots who need 24-hour reference for flight time. At noon, the windows switch to orange to represent 24-hour time, at midnight the windows switch to black to represent 12-hour time. This feature is credited to a rotating disk underneath the main dial.
