1865-1890 |
Only 24 pieces of the GP Triple Gold Bridges Tourbillon Pocket Watch were made & they won a series of awards:
- gold medals for excellence in the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 & 1889;
- & the prestigious Neuchatel Observatory prize in 1911.
It was even rejected from several competitions because it was considered too perfect - an old practice to prevent the same watch from winning repeatedly. |
1918-1954 |
The success of GP Triple Gold Bridges Tourbillon Pocket Watch inspired Patek Phillippe, Vacheron Constantin & Jaeger-LeCoultre to produce a series of Tourbillons. |
1981 |
GIRARD-PERREGAUX successfully reproduced & re-launched the GP Triple Gold Bridges Tourbillon Pocket Watch after 1500 hours of painstaking work.
Andre Curtit, expert & curator of the International Watch Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds: claimed that "this pocket watch is the most beautiful piece of watchmaking work I have seen in my entire career. You (GP) have done better than your grandparents". |
1986 |
GIRARD-PERREGAUX began hard work & gut wrenching brain storming, to miniaturise & simplify the original pocket watch. Some major modifications to the 1981 movements were made in order to squeeze the same mechanism & layout into the much smaller case.
- Watch diameter was decreased significantly from 45mm to 28.6mm
- Shape of the bridges & carriage were modified
- Detent escapement was replaced by the lever escapement
- Whole movement was inverted from the original design.
The Triple Bridges, originally visible from the case-back is now seen through the front to replace the dial. This is the reason why the minute hand of the watch is beneath the hour hand, unlike any other watch.
The end result is an elegant wristwatch much simpler. It takes only 150 work hours to produce. However, it is undeniably the most attractive complication ever in at least commercially viable quantities. |
1991 |
The GP Triple Gold Bridges Tourbillon Wrist Watch (number 1), with reference 9900, was presented during the Basle Fair 1991 to commemorate GP's Centennial. The impact on the media & the watch industry was intense & immediate. The subsequent huge commercial success meant that the Triple Bridges would remain the main engine of GP's drive into the haute horlogerie segment. |
First conceived in 1867, the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges by GIRARD-PERREGAUX won so many awards & accolades that it was eventually precluded from entering any more competitions. Such was the engineering perfection that Constant Girard & his watchmaker Guinard achieved in a single watch.
Besides significant technical achievement, the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges by GIRARD-PERREGAUX is characterized by its purity of design & breathtaking beauty.
Indeed, this timepiece is an exceptional example of the most stunning decoration ever found on a wristwatch movement.
The design of the GP Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges was said to be inspired by the Holy Trinity, where the top bridge (which held the mainspring barrel), the center bridge (holding the hour & minute hand), & the third bridge (holding the tourbillon) represented the Father, Son, & the Holy Spirit respectively.
Other oft-quoted theories behind the three bridge design was that the three bridges represented the past, present, & the future; & even the sunrise, zenith, & sunset.
